mySMARTLife Follower City Palencia has contributed to the organisation of the Social Biking Challenge in Palencia to promote the use of the bicycle as a sustainable transport mode in cities. The event took place from 16 September to 4 October in the context of the European Mobility Week and the Sustainable Mobility Fair in Palencia. The Palencia team won one of three Social Biking Challenge European Mobility Week 2018 awards.
In the evening of 25th October, Palencia Municipality has celebrated the Social Biking awards gala where the Mayor of Palencia, the town urban development councilor and a representative of one of the sponsors have handed over the prizes to the winners of the Social Biking Challenge.
The Social Biking Challenge is a competition created by the European Commission as part of the activities of the European Mobility Week. The competition was organised in 25 European cities in three different categories (individual, couple and team competition). Pedaled kilometers were tracked via an app. Registered citizens who have done the most kilometers during the European mobility week received prizes from local organisations. The best cyclists in the European competition won MTB bicycles. Palencia has competed with another 24 European cities in this challenge and one of Palencia's cycling teams has won the award for the best European cycling team.
About Palencia Sustainable Mobility Fair
The City of Palencia organised a Sustainable Mobility Fair which took place in Palencia from 20-23 September 2018 as part of the European Mobility Week. Interesting conferences, an urban exhibition and multiple participative activities for citizens were organised such as the Social Biking Challenge to promote alternative and sustainable transport modes.
